In the AI village, there were walkthroughs showing how to build machine learning models capable of detecting phishing emails. At Hillstone, I’ve leveraged it widely in unknown malware detection (detection by malware family), and abnormal behavior detection (baseline deviation). AI and ML are fast growing technology areas in cybersecurity. As such, it is another reason why I believe my time spent in the villages is the most valuable use of my bandwidth. My favorite villages are the AI village and Blue Team village. Whereas the official talks are recorded, the conversations in the villages are candid, genuine, and unique. Thankfully, the Defcon events help fill the gaps in knowledge. There’s a definite scarcity when it comes to real-world application of these security tools. It is a way to gain unbiased reviews from other experts of security tools. My favorite part of Defcon is visiting the villages, chatting with other industry experts, and sharing candid opinions about products and current policies. This event is untainted, as vendors and their sales pitches are not present. I had to wait in a long line for a long time in order to gain admission into this exclusive event.ĭefcon is an outstanding opportunity for me to gain an unbiased insight into the rapidly changing cybersecurity landscape. Cameras and recordings are not allowed for the safety of the presenters, some of who have classification reasons to be speaking off the record. Skytalk is an off-the-record series of presentations that discuss “technical deep dives, off-the-beaten path discussions, early-access talks, cool technology, and plenty of shenanigans”. One Defcon talk I never want to miss is the famous Skytalk. The conference is largely run by volunteers and is truly a con by the community, for the community. Defcon doesn’t have a large commercial interest, and is therefore provides more of an engaging, relaxing, and easygoing experience. Blackhat leans toward research reports by top cybersecurity players. When comparing the two conferences, Defcon places a larger emphasis on contests and hacking demonstrations. But for some, these reports are concerning. Those reports can sound very impressive and exciting. ![]() Here are some notable headlines that were scattered throughout the press, such as “The Cyberwarfare in Ukraine”, “A $25 homemade hack of StarLink”, or “Zoom installer flaw may enable root access on macOS”. Both have delivered the latest information in infosec research and development. This year is the 25th for Blackhat and 30th for Defcon. The venue also encompassed three other hotels - LINQ, Harrah’s and Flaming - so be prepared for a lot of walking. In my opinion, it is the most spectacular location Defcon has ever been held in. This year, the main conference was hosted at the Caesar’s Forum. Due to many overlaps between the two events, many Blackhat attendees take part in Defcon as well. For the first time since the start of the pandemic, hackers and security professionals can come together in person at two of the most popular security conferences, Defcon and Black Hat.įor those who are not familiar with Defcon and Blackhat, they are two high-profile events that provide the very latest information to security professionals (Blackhat) and hackers (Defcon). 3 years have passed since then, and we’re finally back in Vegas for the annual “hacker’s summer camp” in the newly built Caesar’s Forum. ![]() It was announced at the end of my last Defcon (Defcon 27) that future iterations of said event would be moved to a new venue in Caesar’s Forum. ![]() ![]() ![]() Zuko starts out as a standard bullying villain, but slow reveals about his history first explain his anger, then give him time to adjust and change. Last Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko planned the series from the start as a three-season story built around three major arcs, and because so much was planned in advance, they had the ability to lay seeds from the very beginning that let the characters flower organically over time. That Iroh/Zuko relationship is part of the rich emotional heart of Last Airbender, but it wouldn’t work so well without a long-term storytelling plan. The episodes to watch: “The Cave of Two Lovers” (season 2), “The Beach” (season 3) The characters actually develop over time Image: Nickelodeon But a lot of Last Airbender’s humor is based in quick-moving banter and rapidly changing situations, and it not only keeps the pace brisk, it helps establish the characters’ relationships - like when exiled Fire Nation prince Zuko keeps getting his towering rage and angst punctured by gentle jibes from his hilariously dry Uncle Iroh. Some of it is slapstick, like the running gag about the traveling cabbage vendor who always manages to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. ![]() Some of it is agreeably dorky, like when Aang - who’s been preserved in ice for a hundred years, and keeps expecting the world to be as he remembers it from the past - starts trying to show how hip and with it he is by busting out century-old Fire Nation slang. Shows aimed at young people can be pretty goofy or over-the-top, but Last Airbender is slyer about its humor. The episodes to watch: “The Storm” (season 1), “The Avatar and the Fire Lord” (season 3) There’s a particular use of humor Image: Nickelodeon And the show gives them a challenge on a Wagnerian scale - they aren’t just trying to save the world, they’re trying to break a cycle that began generations before most of them were born. But a lot of the joys of Last Airbender is the ways it upends these simple, familiar tropes, and finds the deeper ambitions and character conflicts behind all three basic archetypes. Everything about their first encounter feels like standard-issue kids’-show stuff. In the first episode, he encounters the young waterbender Katara, who comes across as a Hermione Granger-style tryhard girl boss sidekick, and her arrogant brother Sokka, an impulsive wannabe warrior and comic-relief butt-monkey. Aang is a chipper Chosen One type with a funny animal sidekick. The show’s structure follows that fractal quality, beginning with a simply explained but narratively expansive goal: A young boy named Aang who has mastered the elemental control of air through a martial art called “airbending” must complete his training in waterbending, earthbending, and firebending so that he can bring balance to his war-torn world and stop the rampaging Fire Nation from conquering the entire planet.īut that plot launches in the first season in a way that seems childish and familiar. A standard children’s-show setup amounts to something spectacular Image: NickelodeonĪvatar: The Last Airbender’s core premise simultaneously spans a hundred years of fictional history and is simple enough to be summed up in the first 40 seconds of its opening sequence. Why do people love Avatar: The Last Airbender so much? Why should you watch it now if you didn’t back when it started? Here are the seven core elements (sorry, we couldn’t pick just four) that make the Nickelodeon series such an engrossing watch for audiences of any age. The arrival of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix has set social media ablaze, as fans gear up for binge-driven rewatches, and fans-to-be look at all the ranting and raving about the show with a curious eye. ![]() ![]() Among these, the queue stands out for its elegance and straightforwardness. Navigating through the landscape of data structures, we often encounter containers that have distinct rules for data entry and retrieval. In this guide, we'll delve deep into the concept of queues, exploring their characteristics, real-world applications, and most importantly, how to effectively implement and use them in Python. From managing tasks in a printer to ensuring data streams seamlessly in live broadcasts, queues play an indispensable role. They form the underlying architecture in many applications. In the constructor, all indexes have been assigned an int with the value of 0.For developers, especially in Python, queues aren't just theoretical constructs from a computer science textbook. One thing to keep in mind: The size variable is used so we can avoid having to loop through the array and count "valid" integers. The implementation of the size and isEmpty methods are as easy as it gets. ![]() We also provide a private variable size to keep track of the number of elements. package priorityqueue Īs you can see, we use an int array as the inner data structure, and initials it's default size to 10 in the constructor. The code skeleton for the priority queue is presented below. Our solution to this problem is that we'll provide a private method double() , which "increases" the capacity of the array. We'll implement one operation at a time, but first, we have to decide which inner data structure we want to use.Īn array is perfectly fine, so we'll roll with that.įor those of you that are familiar with arrays, you probably know that arrays have a fixedsize in Java. Now, let's implement a non-genericpriority queue in Java. In a production environment, I highly suggest that you use the default implementation of the priority queue, instead of "home-growing" it. Please note that the Java implementation of the priority queue uses different names for the methods. peek - Returning the front element of the queue, without removing it.contains - Returning true if the queue contains the given element. ![]() ![]() size - Returning the size/number of elements in the queue.isEmpty - Returning true if the queue is empty.dequeue - Removing an element from the queue.enqueue - Inserting an element into the queue. The most basic set of operations for any implementation of a queue is: To keep our example implementation compliant with the Java specification, the least element is defined as the element with the highest priority. If you were to implement a priority queue in real life, you probably want to make use of generics - or just do like any other developer and use the built-in. However, keep in mind that this is for demonstration purposes only. In our example, the priority queue will be limited to int, so natural ordering is perfectly fine. So for simplicity's sake, we'll order the elements based on their natural ordering. In this article, we'll focus on how to implement a priority queue. ![]() Order elements with a custom Comparator.Order elements based on their natural ordering. In a priority queue, the elements are being removed from the queue based on their priority. This translates to the requirement that: Every element in a priority queue must have a priority associated with it.Īs you might have guessed, the element with the highest priority is removed from the queue (dequeued).īut how do should you define the priority of the elements in the queue? Defining Priorities to Elementsīasically, you have two alternatives for defining priorities to the elements in the queue. A priority queue does not follow the FIFO principle.A standard queue strictly follows the FIFO (First-In-Last-Out) principle. The difference lies in how the elements are being processed: The priority queue is a somewhat similar data structure to the queue. ![]() ![]() ![]() The joke here is this caters a lot more towards Bridge Constructor fans as the gameplay core is still very good. It is no secret that AMC is trying to bleed their cash cow dry with the recent Magic the Gathering tie in and launch of yet another spin-off series, so I guess why not a bridge puzzle game. It seems to fall into one single category – Walking Dead enthusiasts. Who is this game for? Genuinely, I have asked myself this question a number of times, and I cannot put my finger on it. Instead, we have a faux 3d cell-shaded game that looks fine but feels like a cheap attempt to capture some of that Telltale Walking Dead nostalgia. Something else could have been done to make this more distinctive, perhaps follow the comic book art style or go more naturalistic. It worked well in the main series and helped distinguish the game as unique. That, combined with most game sounds being very generic zombie grunts or car crash noises gives little to be liked in the audio department.įinally, for some reason, all Walking Dead games have to follow the Telltale cell-shaded look. This comes as somewhat of a surprise as previous instalments had good ambient background music. The music is unfortunately just as dreadful, and by around the 4th to 5th mission, I found myself turning it off to replace it with something from my own curation. The plot thankfully is irrelevant anyway, but if you want to play the game as a Walking Dead fan, I give fair warning that it’s a far cry from Robert Kirkman’s voice. That is not to say the other voices in the game are any better, just that Eugine’s were excruciatingly painful to read. Eugine’s ‘clever’ dialogue is dialled up to 11 and goes well beyond cringe bad, to the point that I began skipping all the cutscenes entirely. With the Portal Bridge Constructor, Glados’ writing and humour managed to match the tone of the originals. For a tie in-game, the dialogue is frankly god awful. Sadly there are quite a few issues outside of the core gameplay. No longer are you just driving cars across bridges that you slapped together from sheer force of will. You slowly build-up to this rube goldberg like event through trial and error, and when you finally get it to work, it’s very satisfying. A good example of this is having to drop crates using one of your characters who can then shoot the explosive barrels you have catapulted into the air to break a wall, allowing your stunt car to drive through and smash another wall for you to progress. ![]() Anyone familiar with the series will feel at home, but the added challenge of team management and timing is interesting and keeps the gameplay from being stale. Essentially each level is a physics puzzle that builds on the last concepts you learnt, to progress a rather pointless story.įollowing on from the last game in the series (Portal) some new mechanics keep the game fresh and interesting. Gameplay follows simple advancement and should be reasonable to those new and old to Bridge Constructor games. Let’s look at the good, the bad and the weird of it all. Call Clockstone and let’s pray Hideo Kojima never works it out.”ĭespite it being quite the obvious cash-in that AMC continues to roll out on the still-living corpse that is The Walking Dead series, there are still a few good points to yet another bridge builder from Clockstone and publisher Headup. “10 minutes before the pitch consultation sir,” a secretary informs. “Do I even have to say it? ” they ask through gritted teeth.
